In manual though the ball screws will move (creep) when not intended. The original acme screw has more hold on the non moving axis. So if you have ball screws you need to always tighten down the non moving axis.
Even getting the X and Y axis converted gets you up to a 2 axis CNC and most things like profiling and drilling can be done while you ponder the Z axis conversion. IIRC there are some XY axis ball screw kits out there somewhere for a BP knee mill. Combine that with a couple of servo/drives and a belt reduction and your half way there.
